Starting in 2011, Tennis Cambodia has played host to ITF Futures Events. In the beginning of 2011, TC held two ITF US-$15,000. In 2012 and 2013, towards the end of the year the federation hosted three straight weeks of ITF US-$10,000. Three more weeks are planned for the end of this year as well. Every year, players from more than 20 different countries travel to Cambodia to compete. Each year has seen the pool of players grow stronger and stronger, and each year Tennis Cambodia has been more organized and efficient with the operations of hosting these competitive events.
Only 17-year-old Soon Woo Kwon captured his maiden ITF Future title, winning the GLF Open, the first of three events held in Phnom Penh. The world number 1092 defeated in Saturday’s final his fellow countryman Ji Hoon Son, winning 7-5, 6-1. Kwon didn’t lose his service and broke his opponent three times to prevail in 66 minutes.
Kuan-Yi Lee and Shao-Fan Liu from Chinese Taipei defeated the two Korean’s, who teamed up in the doubles competition to clinch the team title, winning the final 6-7, 6-4, 13-11.
