Ilya Ivashka from Belarus is the champion of the Istanbul Challenger TED Open, held on hard court at the Ted Sports Club. The No. 7 seed of the $104,160 ATP Challenger Tour event defeated Martin Klizan of Slovakia in Sunday’s singles final.
Ivashka advanced to the championship match with wins over Turkish wild card entry Ergi Kirkin, Cem Ilkel of Turkey, Dmitry Popko from Kazakhstan and Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi. The 26-year-old from Minsk broke Klizan’s serve five times to secure victory in one hour and 26 minutes.
By lifting his third ATP Challenger career trophy, his first of the season, Ivashka pocketed $14,400 in prize money as well as 100 ATP Ranking points.
On Saturday, Ariel Behar of Uruguay and Gonzalo Escobar from Ecuador took the doubles title. The top seeds rallied past the US-American duo of Robert Galloway and Nathaniel Lammons 4-6, 6-3, 10-7. The encounter lasted one hour and 16 minutes.
