Thomaz Bellucci opened his home campaign at the Campeonato Internacional de Tenis in Campinas, Brazil, with a straight-sets win on Monday. The 32-year-old Sao Paulo resident defeated Camilo Ugo Carabell of Argentina 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of the $52,080 ATP Challenger 80 clay-court event hosted by the Sociedade Hípica de Campinas.
Bellucci, a four-time champion on the ATP Tour and currently ranked World No. 282, converted five of his nine break-point opportunities to advance in one hour and 18 minutes.
“I think it was a good start into the tournament,” Bellucci said afterwards. “Carabelli is a good clay-court player with solid shots. The first set was impeccable. At the beginning of the second set I made some mistakes. I didn’t serve well and he played more powerful that I did. The important thing is that from 4-1, I started to play very well again.”
The former World No. 21 awaits the winner of the encounter between Marcelo Tomas Barrios of Chile and No. 5 seed Mohamed Safwat from Egypt in the second round.
Facundo Bagnis rallied from a set down to outlast Joao Lucas Reis da Silva from Brazil 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4 in his opening match. The No. 3 seed from Argentina struck nine aces and won 83 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after two hours and 34 minutes. Bagnis will next take on either compatriot Renzo Olivo or Ukrainian Vitaliy Sachko.
Emilio Gomez emerged victorious from the all-Ecuadorian affair with Roberto Quiroz, winning 6-3, 7-6(10) in one hour and 43 minutes. The No. 6 seed will play the winner of the match between Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves of Brazil, who clinched his maiden title on the ATP Challenger Tour on home soil at the Sao Paulo Open Tennis last Sunday, and Spanish qualifier Carlos Gomez-Herrera.
Alejandro Tabilo of Chile caused the upset of the day by knocking out No. 2 seed Thiago Seyboth Wild from Brazil, 6-1, 6-3. The 23-year-old Santiago resident saved all six break points he faced and capitalized on all of his four own break-point chances to secure victory in one hour and 17 minutes. Up next will be local alternate Orlando Luz.
