Gran Canaria, Pozoblanco To Host Challenger Tournaments

ATP Challenger Gran Canaria at El Cortijo Tennis Club

GRAN CANARIA, January 4, 2021

Miguel Díaz, president of the Spanish Tennis Federation RFET, announced this weekend through his official Twitter account that Spain will host three new ATP Challenger Tour tournaments this season. Two of them will be held in the Canary Islands and the third in the Cordovan town of Pozoblanco, which returns to the circuit in mid-July after having lost its spot on the calendar a few years ago due to the economic crisis.

The event was played on outdoor hard courts from 1999 to 2012. Current World No. 13 Roberto Bautista Agut was the tournament’s last champion defeating Arnau Brugues-Davi in an all-Spanish final in straight sets.

The Challengers in the Canary Islands will be held at the El Cortijo Tennis Club in Telde, Gran Canaria. The venue will host two consecutive events at the end of February and the beginning of March.

“Gran Canaria is delighted to offer this excellent opportunity for Spanish tennis and its players to continue growing and for Canarian tennis to continue to be a national and international benchmark in organizing events at the highest level,” El Cortijo Tennis Club stated on its Facebook page.

These three events will join the list of Spanish Challengers, which includes tournaments in Madrid, Marbella, Alicante, Murcia, Segovia, Mallorca, Sevilla and Barcelona.
