CANBERRA, January 13, 2016

Seven of the top eight seeds have made it through to the quarterfinals on Wednesday at the $75,000 Canberra ATP Challenger, while Australia’s last hopes in the tournament have all fallen. Players again battled tough conditions as temperatures soared to 38 degrees.

Fifth seed, Ivan Dodig had a comfortable win over Spain’s Daniel Gimeno-Traver dropping just 5 games in the opening match of the day. The world number 90 from Croatia won 82% of his first service points to prevail in one hour and five minutes.

Third and fourth seeds Daniel Munoz de la Nava and Marcel Granollers also had straight set victories. Munoz de la Nava defeated Xin Gao, winning 7-6, 6-3 in one hour and 26 minutes, while Granollers defeated Aussie Maverick Banes 6-4, 6-3 in 80 minutes.

Top seed Paolo Lorenzi looked in trouble early after going down a break, but recovered to take the match 7-5, 6-1 against Yoshihito Nishioka. The 34-year-old Italian smashed 9 aces and and won 89% of his first service points to seal victory in 80 minutes. Sixth seed Diego Schwartzman came through a tough match with qualifier Frank Moser, to book his place in the quarterfinals. The 23-year-old Argentine won 6-4, 7-6 in one hour and 23 minutes.

Australia’s Max Purcell put up an impressive fight against second seed and world number 70 Santiago Giraldo. After losing the first set 6-2, Purcell bounced back to take the second in a tiebreak. But Giraldo’s experience shone through in the third, taking it 6-3. Andrew Whittingon was a set and a break up in his match against Quentin Halys but was unable to close out the second set. Halys eventually took the match, winning 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 in two hours and 22 minutes.
