MONTE-CARLO, April 12, 2021 (Press Release)
The second day of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters has been highly disturbed by the rain. Play was suspended for the first time just before midday in the Principality, before action resumed for more than an hour at 4:30 p.m. But then, the remainder of action has been cancelled.
Before weather stopped play from continuing for the day, four players advanced to the second round at the Monte-Carlo Country Club: Aslan Karatsev of Russia, Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, John Millman of Australia and US-American Tommy Paul.
Karatsev defeated Italian wild card entry Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-4 to face No. 4 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece in the second round. Davidovich Fokina edged past Aussie Alex de Minaur 6-4, 7-6(3) and will next take on eighth seeded Italian Matteo Berrettini.
Millman beat Frenchman Ugo Humbert 6-3, 6-3 and will either play Canadian young gun Felix Auger-Aliassime, coached by Toni Nadal, or No. 16 seed Cristian Garin of Chile. Paul benefited from the retirement of Spanish lucky loser Pedro Martinez leading 4-1 in the first set.

Five singles matches were in progress when play was cancelled.
On Court Rainier III, Auger-Aliassime led Garin 4-2. On Court 2, recent Miami Open Masters champion Hubert Hurkacz from Poland held a 6-3, 0-1 advantage against Italian Thomas Fabbiano.
On Court des Princes, Daniel Evans from Great Britain had just taken the first set against 2019 Monte-Carlo runner-up Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 6-3. Monegasque wild card Lucas Catarina was up a set and a break against Italy’s Salvatore Caruso 7-6(3), 3-2 on Court 9. French veteran Jeremy Chardy was about to serve for the first set at 5-4 against Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan.
Each of those matches will be second on court Tuesday.
