MALLORCA, June 4, 2021
Reigning US Open champion Dominic Thiem has received a wild card into the main draw of the inaugural Mallorca Championships. The ATP 250 grass-court tournament will be held from June 19 to 26 at the Mallorca Country Club in Santa Ponca.
The World No. 4 from Austria fell in the opening round of the French Open at Roland Garros to Spaniard Pablo Andujar and is looking for a good preparation for the upcoming Championships at Wimbledon. “After the early exit in Paris, the break until Wimbledon would have been very long. The tournament in Mallorca is a perfect opportunity to get some additional match practice before Wimbledon. I am delighted to be there when the tournament will celebrate its debut,” said 17-time ATP Tour champion Thiem, who also triumphed on grass at the 2016 MercedesCup in Stuttgart.
Tournament director Toni Nadal is delighted with Thiem’s appearance in Mallorca: “Awarding a wild card to a Grand Slam champion is proof of the great work that has been done to make this first edition of the Mallorca Championships possible. We are very happy that Dominic Thiem, one of the most successful players of recent years, is coming to our tournament in Mallorca.”
The local health authorities have approved a maximum of 1,500 fans per day. The Mallorca Championships, offering €900,000 in prize money, was originally set to make its debut in 2020, but the event was not held due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, it will be the first time that an ATP Tour tournament has been contested in Mallorca since 2002 and also the first one hosted on grass in Spain. It will also be the first time that night sessions will take place at a grass-court tournament. Special care of the courts and perfect climatic conditions in Mallorca will make matches under floodlights possible.
