A day of rain cooled down the ongoing BNP Paribas Polish Cup, as nine matches – singles and doubles – were postponed on Thursday.

In one of only two matches played, No. 3 seed Lukas Klein defeated Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov 7-5, 6-1. The World No. 251 from Slovakia sent down four aces and won 75 per cent of his first-service points to advance to the quarterfinals of the €44,820 clay-court tournament held at the Legia Tenis & Golf in Warsaw. The encounter lasted one hour and 24 minutes.

Up next for Klein will be Javier Barranco Cosano. The 22-year-old Spaniard, who reached the stage of the final eight at the Sauerland Open in Lüdenscheid, Germany last week, rallied past Portuguese Nuno Borges 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Barranco Cosano capitalized on four of his 18 break-point chances to prevail after two hours and six minutes.

Hope for better weather

“It is not very bad yet, we still have time, tomorrow the weather promises to be better,” tournament director Mariusz Fyrstenberg said.

“Today we had a lot of fans coming to the courts again, the atmosphere was really nice, but it’s hard to deal with the rain. Tomorrow, as soon as it is possible and the sun comes out, we take the covers off the courts and matches will resume. Thanks to the team that is working on the preparation of the courts. The most interesting matches are still ahead of us. We are looking forward to emotional days.”
