Argentine Camilo Ugo Carabelli and Nino Serdarusic of Croatia will compete in Sunday’s singles final of the BNP Paribas Polish Cup hosted by the Legia Tenis & Golf in Warsaw. Both players successfully completed double duty by winning their quarterfinal as well as semi-final matches on Saturday.
Carabelli had knocked out No. 6 seed Nicolas Jarry of Chile 6-2, 6-2 followed by a hard-fought 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(0) victory over Spaniard Javier Barranco Cosano. The 22-year-old from Buenos Aires withstood six aces from Barranco Cosano and broke his serve four times to prevail after two hours and 58 minutes.
“I am very happy because this is my first final,” Carabelli said. “It was an incredible match and I am very happy.”
Meanwhile, Serdarusic had defeated Michael Vrbensky from the Czech Republic 7-6(1), 6-2 in the stage of the final eight before he edged out No. 2 seed Jozef Kovalik from Slovakia 7-6(3), 7-6(6). The World No. 272 Zagreb native fired 10 aces, won 80 per cent of his first-service points and 51 per cent of the total point played to advance after two hours and six minutes.
“I feel great. It’s my second final after last week,” said Serdarusic, who finished runner-up to Holger Rune in Verona, Italy seven days ago. “It was a tough, physical day today against very difficult opponents. I am very happy to be through.”
Both players are seeking their maiden trophy on the ATP Challenger Tour. Carabelli has celebrated four triumphs on the ITF Pro Circuit, Serdarusic has captured eight Futures titles. The pair will meet for the first time.
In the doubles final, No. 3 seeds Hans Hach Verdugo and Miguel Angel Reyes-Verela of Mexico will take on wild card entries Vladyslav Manafov from the Ukraine and Piotr Matuszewski of Poland.
