With local favourite Benjamin Bonzi and Australian Christopher O’Connell, the top two seeds of the Saint-Tropez Open, an €44,820 ATP Challenger hard-court event being held at the Tennis Club de Saint Tropez in Southern France, will go head-to-head in Sunday’s championship match.
No. 1 seed Bonzi emerged victorious from the all-French semi-final, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 over Hugo Grenier. The World No. 94 Nimes native withstood six aces from his opponent and broke Grenier’s serve three times to prevail after one hour and 57 minutes.
Later on Saturday, O’Connell defeated his compatriot and No. 8 seed Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-1, 7-6(3). The World No. 126 from Sydney won 82 per cent of his first-service points and 56 per cent of the total points played to seal victory in one hour and 53 minutes.
Bonzi is seeking his fourth ATP Challenger title following his triumphs in Potchefstroom, South Africa, Ostrava in the Czech Republic and at the Open Castilla y Leon in El Espinar, Spain, earlier this season. O’Connell could lift his third career trophy, his first since October 2019. The pair will meet for the first time.
Sancic/Sitak take doubles title
In other action, Antonio Sancic of Croatia and Artem Sitak from New Zealand took the doubles title. The second seeds edged past top favourites Roman Arneodo of Monaco and Manuel Guinard from France 7-6(5), 6-4. The encounter lasted one hour and 33 minutes.
By winning their first team title, Sancic and Sitak split €2,670 in prize money and earned 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
