Slovenia Defeats Paraguay In Davis Cup

PORTOROZ/STARNBERG, September 18, 2021

Slovenia defeated Paraguay 3-1 in the first round of the Davis Cup by Rakuten World Group II tie. Held on clay at the Tennis Centre Portoroz, the home team of captain Grega Zemlja sealed the victory without the help of their top-ranked players Aljaz Bedene, Blaz Rola and Blaz Kavcic.

On Friday, World No. 688 Tom Kocevar-Desman beat Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 6-2, 6-2 in exactly one hour of play followed by a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory of 17-year-old Bor Artnak. The World No. 44 in the ITF Juniors Ranking capitalized on seven of his 15 break-point chances to prevail after two hours and eight minutes.

Later in the afternoon, Tom Kocevar-Desman and Matic Spec teamed up to defeat Adolfo Daniel Vallejo and Martin Antonio Vergara del Puerto 6-2, 6-2 in 69 minutes to secure the tie.

On Saturday, Paraguay won the first and last reverse singles rubber when Jose Hernando Escurra Isnardi rallied past Slovenian teenager Sebastian Dominko 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 in one hour and 27 minutes.

The eight highest-ranked winners (Davis Cup Rankings as at Monday 20 September 2021) of the World Group II ties will automatically progress to the 2022 World Group I Play-offs.
