MELILLA/STARNBERG, September 26, 2021
Alex Marti Pujolras captured his maiden title on the Pro Circuit. The 22-year-old Spaniard lifted the trophy of the XVI Internacional Masculino De Tenis Melilla Sport Capital held on clay at the venue of the Federacion Melillense de Tenis in Melilla, an autonomous city of Spain located on the northwest coast of Africa, sharing a border with Morocco.
Marti Pujolras, top seed of the ITF World Tennis Tour M15 event, benefited from the retirement of No. 2 seed Carlos Lopez Montagud in Sunday’s singles final. The World No. 557, who finished runner-up on home soil in Santander earlier this month, converted three of his five break points and was leading 6-4, 2-0 after 50 minutes when Lopez Montagud was forced to stop playing due to injury.
The tournament had to cope with bad weather on the shores of the Alboran Sea throughout the week and consequently both finalists had to do double duty. Earlier in the day, Barcelona resident Marti Pujolras defeated fellow Spaniard Daniel Rincon 6-2, 6-1 in the semi-finals after one hour and 17 minutes.
Lopez Montagud had to go the distance fighting past his compatriot Miguel Damas 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 to reach the championship match after two hours and 27 minutes.
Mesquida Berg/Pereira lift doubles trophies
In other action, Oscar Mesquida Berg of Spain and Miguel Fernando Pereira from Chile earned the doubles title. The No. 4 seeds edged past teenagers Edas Butvilas from Lithuania and Alejandro Manzanera Pertusa from Spain, who entered the competition by a wild card, 6-2, 6-7(3), 11-9.
The final lasted one hour and 30 minutes.
