BARI/STARNBERG, November 28, 2021
Oscar Otte‘s busy weeks in November concluded with another title win. Following a first-round loss on home soil in Eckental, his triumph in Ortisei in South Tyrol and a quarterfinal in Helsinki, Finland, the World No. 112 lifted the trophy of the Open Città di Bari.
The No. 3 seed of the €44,820 ATP Challenger Tour hard-court event, emerged victorious from the all-German final with eighth favourite Daniel Masur, 7-5, 7-5. Otte successfully completed double duty at the Country Club Bari on Sunday, winning two matches to be crowned champion.
The 28-year-old from Cologne defeated Italian Thomas Fabbiano 6-4, 6-4 at the beginning of the day, and then he returned to the Centre Court to fire 10 aces against Masur and to break his compatriot’s serve two times. Otte, who dropped only one set en route to the title match, secured victory in one hour and 18 minutes.
Masur clawed through a tight three-setter in the semi-finals against Alessandro Vavassori of Italy 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(5) before his defeat against Otte. He took away from Italy €3,650 in prize money as well as 48 ATP Ranking points.
Otte has strengthened his bid for a main draw spot at the 2022 Australian Open and is projected to reach a new career-high Ranking of World No. 103 on Monday. By claiming his fifth ATP Challenger career title, his third of the season, Otte pocketed €6,190 in prize money and earned 80 ATP Ranking points.
He has become the first German to clinch three Challenger titles in one season since 2017 when Cedrik-Marcel Stebe and Maximilian Marterer achieved this feat. Otte will end his season at the Città di Forli 2, Italy next week.
