SAO PAULO/STARNBERG, December 1, 2021
The ATP Challenger clay-court swing in Brazil continues this week with the Dove Men & Care Challenger Sao Paulo hosted by the Clube Hipico De Santo Amaro in Sao Paulo. Four local favourites opened their home campaign with a win on Tuesday to reach a spot in the second round of the $52,080 event.
Thiago Seyboth Wild defeated Colombian alternate Alejandro Gonzalez 6-3, 6-4. The No. 3 seed capitalized on six of his 12 break-point opportunities to advance after one hour and 36 minutes.
“I managed to show my strengths to come out with the victory. Happy to have won and I’ll prepare myself better for the next match,” the World No. 131 said.
Seyboth Wild will next take on Facundo Diaz Agosto, who beat qualifier and fellow Argentine Gonzalo Villanueva 7-5, 6-1 in one hour and 25 minutes.
No. 6 seed Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves won his match against Pedja Krstin after earning the first set 6-4, when the Serbian was forced to retire feeling unwell. In the next round, the Campinas native will face Johan Nikles from Switzerland.
In the bottom half of the draw, Pedro Sakamoto emerged victorious from the all-Brazilian affair with Gilbert Klier Junior, rallying 2-6, 7-5, 7-5. The 28-year-old from Guarulhos outpointed his compatriot 98-94 after two hours and 16 minutes.
“We practice together. We know each other well and we are friends,” said Sakamoto. “It was a tough match, I’m going through a difficult time with several physical issues, so it’s great to come out with the victory.”
The World No. 369 will next play No. 5 seed Nicolas Jarry, who edged past Colombian lucky loser Alejandro Gomez 7-6(1), 6-4 in one hour and 37 minutes.
Wild card entry Gustavo Heide caused the upset of the day by knocking out No. 4 seed Juan Ignacio Londero of Argentina 6-3, 7-5. The 19-year-old Sao Paulo native fired 13 aces, saved all eight break points he faced and capitalized on three of his own six break-point chances to seal victory in one hour and 38 minutes.
Up next for the World No. 532, a winner of three titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour this season, will be either Argentine qualifier Matius Zukas or Brazilian qualifier Igor Marcondes.
