Home favourite Gonzalo Lama headlined Wednesday’s second-round action at the Dove Men & Care Legion Sudamericana Challenger Concepción. The World No. 301 from Chile reached the quarterfinals of the of the $53,120 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event following a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback victory over Argentine Gonzalo Villanueva.
In an even encounter, Lama broke serve three times and won three points more than his opponent to prevail after two hours and 11 minutes. Up next for 28-year-old Santiago native, a winner of four titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour last year, will be No. 6 seed Facundo Mena of Argentina, who beat Cristian Rodriguez from Venezuela 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 22 minutes.
In the top half of the singles draw, No. 3 seed Daniel Elahi Galan also had to go the distance against US-American Nicolas Moreno de Alboran. The World No. 121 from Colombia won 73 per cent of his first-service points and 57 per cent of the total points played to secure a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory in one hour and 58 minutes.
Elahi Galan will next take on Camilo Ugo Carabelli. The seventh favourite from Argentina defeated Noah Rubin from the United States 6-2, 6-2. The match lasted one hour and 22 minutes.
