Copil Clinches Portimão International Open Title

Marius Copil clinched the title of the Portimão M25 International Open hosted by the Portimão Tennis and Padel Club and organized with the support of the Portimão City Council as well as the Portuguese Tennis Federation. The 31-year-old Romanian, top seed of the ITF World Tennis Tour M25 hard-court tournament in the Algarve, defeated No. 3 seed Alexey Vatutin of Russia 7-5, 6-2 in Sunday’s singles final.

Competing on the ITF Pro Cicuit for the first time since May 2016, former World No. 56 Copil battled his way to the championship match with wins over Sebastian Fanselow of Germany, Maximilian Neuchrist from Austria, Brazilian Gabriel Decamps and Gijs Brouwer from the Netherlands. The current World No. 260 broke Vatutin’s serve five times and outpointed his opponent 62-48 to prevail after one hour and 24 minutes.

Copil has captured his fist title win since lifting his third ATP Challenger career trophy in Budapest, Hungary in October 2016. The Arad native secured his fourth crown on the ITF Pro Circuit, his first since 2010.

Yu Hsiou Hsu/Oberleitner crowned doubles champions

On Saturday, Yu Hsiou Hsu from Chinese Taipei and Austrian Neil Oberleitner confirmed their status as the first seeds by winning the doubles title. They fought past Maximilian Neuchrist and Kai Wehnelt of Germany 6-3, 3-6 and 10-7.

The final lasted one hour and 10 minutes.
