Alessandro Giannessi emerged victorious from Thursday’s all-Italian second-round match with Andrea Pellegrino to reach the quarterfinals of the Regione Abruzzo Aterno Gas & Power Cup II ATP Challenger 80 clay-court tournament. The 31-year-old from La Spezia won 6-4, 6-2.

Giannessi saved both break points he faced and capitalized on three of his own eight break-point chances to prevail after one hour and 26 minutes. The World No. 186, a winner of three ATP Challenger Tour career titles, will next take on Hungarian qualifier Zsombor Piros.

In the longest match of the day, the 22-year-old Budapest native rallied past Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori 5-7, 6-4, 6-0. Piros won 53 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in two hours and nine minutes.

In other action, Manuel Guinard won the all-French encounter with qualifier Alexis Gautier 6-1, 6-0. The 26-year-old alternate from Saint-Malo was in total control of the match, didn’t face a break point and broke Gautier’s serve six times to succeed after only 57 minutes.

Up next for Guinard will be Jozef Kovalik of Slovakia, who defeated Dutch lucky loser Robin Haase 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and six minutes.
