ROSETO DEGLI ABRUZZI/STARNBERG, March 18, 2022
World No. 159 Chun-hsin Tseng leads the semi-finals line-up of the €45,730 Regione Abruzzo Aterno Gas & Power Cup II hosted by the Tennis Club Roseto in Central Italy. The No. 8 seed of the ATP Challenger 80 clay-court tournament knocked out last week’s champion and third favourite Carlos Taberner of Spain 6-4, 6-4 in the stage of the last eight on Friday.
Tseng converted five of his 10 break-point chances and won 56 per cent of the total points played to advance after one hour and 54 minutes.
“I knew that it would be tight and intense match today,” said Tseng, who remains the only seeded player left in the singles draw. “I think we both played very well. There were a lot of long rallies and many big shots. I really enjoyed this great match today.
“My goal is to win every tournament. I have just come from Indian Wells and it was tough to change from hard court to the clay. I needed to feel the courts in the first matches but it is my favourite surface and so I enjoy playing here. It is a nice place.”
The 20-year-old from Chinese Taipei will next take on Timofey Skatov from Kazakhstan, who defeated Croatian alternate Nino Serdarusic 6-4, 7-5(5).
Giannessi flying the Italian flag
In the bottom half of the draw, Alessandro Giannessi beat Hungarian qualifier Zsombor Piros 6-2, 7-5. The 31-year-old Italian struck eight aces and won 74 per cent of his first-service points to seal victory in one hour and 28 minutes.
Giannessi will next play French alternate Manuel Guinard, who eased past Jozef Kovalik of Slovakia 6-1, 6-3. The encounter lasted one hour and 12 minutes.
