Frenchman Manuel Guinard and Chun-hsin Tseng of Chinese Taipei will compete in Sunday’s singles final of the Regione Abruzzo Aterno Gas & Power Cup II hosted by the Tennis Club Roseto in Central Italy.

Guinard defeated home favourite Alessandro Giannessi 7-5, 6-1 in the stage of the last four on Saturday. The 26-year-old alternate from Saint-Malo was 5-3 down in the opening set but managed to recover, converted six of his nine break-point opportunities to seal victory in one hour and 14 minutes.

“I played a bad service game at 4-3 but I tried to be more aggressive in the following and it worked out. I broke back, later broke his serve again and the match went my way. I am very happy about it,” Guinard said.

Earlier in the day, Tseng battled past Timofey Skatov of Kazakhstan 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(6). The No. 8 seed of the €45,730 ATP Challenger clay-court tournament broke serve seven times, won six points less than his opponent but prevailed after exactly three hours of play.

Following nine title wins on the ITF World Tennis Tour, World No. 199 Guinard is eying his first Challenger crown. Tseng could lift his third career trophy, his second of the season after his triumph in Bengaluru, India last month. Guinard won the only previous meeting between the two on clay at the RPM Prague Open 2021.

Agamenone/Guinard earn doubles title

Guinard returned to action later, winning the doubles title alongside Italian Franco Agamenone. The unseeded pair defeated No. 3 seeds Ivan and Matej Sabanov of Serbia 7-6(2), 7-6(3). The final lasted one hour and 37 minutes.

By winning their first team title, Agamenone and Guinard split €2,670 in prize money and pocketed 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
