SANTA CRUZ DE LA SIERRA/STARNBERG, March 27, 2022
Juan Pablo Varillas from Peru and Briton Paul Jubb will compete in Sunday’s singles final of the Dove Men & Care Challenger Bolivia 2. Varillas knocked out World No. 105 and second-seeded Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas 6-2, 6-4 in the stage of the last four on Saturday evening at the Club de Tenis Santa Cruz.
The No. 3 seed of the $53,120 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event saved all seven break points he faced and capitalized on three of his own 14 break-point opportunities to secure victory in exactly two hours of play.
Earlier in the day, Jubb defeated Brazilian lucky loser Daniel Dutra da Silva 6-4, 7-5. The 22-year-old Englishman broke his rival’s serve four times and won 53 per cent of the total points played to prevail after one hour and 43 minutes.
World No. 110 Varillas is bidding for his fifth ATP Challenger career crown, his first of the season. After seven title wins on the ITF World Tennis Tour, Jubb could lift his maiden Challenger trophy. The York native is currently sitting on a career-high ranking of World No. 296. Varillas and Jubb will meet for the first time.
Dutchmen triumph in doubles
In other action, Jesper de Jong and Bart Stevens clinched the doubles title. The unseeded Dutchmen edged past the tournament’s No. 3 seeds Nicolas Barrientos of Colombia and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela from Mexico 6-4, 3-6, 10-6. The final lasted one hour and 19 minutes.
By winning their second team title after Guayaquil in Ecuador last year, de Jong and Stevens split $3,100 in prize money and pocketed 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
