Following the Mexico City Open, the second leg of the Mexican ATP Challenger Tour swing this spring is being held this week in San Luis Potosi, the capital and with about one million inhabitants the most populous city of the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi. The city is named after King Louis IX of France, who is the city’s patron saint. Potosi was added in reference to the fabulously rich mines of Potosi, Bolivia, discovered some forty years before the city was founded, as the exploitation of silver and gold mines in Cerro de San Pedro, near San Luis, was the main reason for the founding of the city in 1592.
The San Luis Open is the oldest tournament and second-longest running on the ATP Challenger Tour behind only Tampere, Finland. The Club Deportivo Potosino has welcomed players and fans since 1980. After a two-year hiatus due to the coronavirus crisis, the event offering a total prize money of $53,120 is back with its 35th edition.

Martin, Escobedo advance
Main draw action kicked off Monday with top seed Andrej Martin opening his title bid with a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 first-round victory over Julian Lenz of Germany. The World No. 133 from Slovakia converted six of his 11 break-point chances to advance in just under one hour of play. Martin will next take on German youngster Nicola Kuhn, who fought past Juan Pablo Ficovich of Argentina 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-3 after two hours and 32 minutes.
Third-seeded US-American Ernesto Escobedo also had good start into the tournament. The 25-year-old from Los Angeles defeated local wild card entry Alex Hernandez 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 25 minutes and will next play either Brazilian Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida or Denis Istomin from Uzbekistan.
