Etcheverry Edges Past Cecchinato At Perugia Challenger

The ATP Challenger Tour is back at the Tennis Club Perugia, one of the oldest venues on the circuit, for the seventh edition of the Internazionali Di Tennis Città Di Perugia| G.I.MA Tennis Cup. Defending champion Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina opened his title bid with a hard-fought 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 comeback first-round win over Italian Marco Cecchinato on Monday.

The No. 3 seed of the €134,920 clay-court tournament sent down four aces and won 82 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after two hours and 16 minutes. Etcheverry will next take on Flavio Cobolli of Italy, who defeated Timofey Skatov of Kazakhstan 7-6(4), 6-3 in exactly two hours of play.

Fourth-seeded Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena also advanced to the second round. The World No. 94 edged past home favourite Franco Agamenone 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Carballes Baena converted five of his seven break-point chances to seal victory in two hours and 25 minutes. Up next for the Tenerife native will be either Elias Ymer from Sweden or local wild card entry Luca Potenza.
