German qualifier Maximilian Marterer continued his fine run of form this week in Italy by reaching the quarterfinals of the Internazionali Di Tennis Città Di Perugia| G.I.MA Tennis Cup. The 26-year-old Nürnberg native battled past home favourite Andrea Arnaboldi 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 on Thursday.

Marterer, a winner of seven ATP Challenger Tour crowns, struck 10 aces and won 73 per cent of his first-service points to secure victory in two hours and one minute. The World No. 208 will next take on Italian young gun Giulio Zeppieri, who defeated Cristian Rodriguez of Colombia 6-2, 7-5 in one hour and 10 minutes.

“I’m very happy with my performance today. I stayed focused from the first to the last point. The conditions seem to suit Rodriguez’ game, so it was important to start strong and serve well. In the second set my opponent raised the level but I was solid on my serve and closed the match out,” Zeppieri said.

In other action, Jaume Munar beat Italian Francesco Passaro 7-6(4), 6-4. The No. 2 seed from Spain converted three of his four break-point chances to prevail after one hour and 43 minutes.

“I am happy to have won such a complicated match. The serve and volley? I’m working on it, it’s a nice alternative for my game. It helped me to get out of the complicated moments of the challenge,” said Munar.

Up next for the 25-year-old from Mallorca will be fifth favourite Thiago Monteiro of Brazil. The World No. 100 rallied past Salvatore Caruso of Italy 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The encounter lasted two hours and 32 minutes.
