Facundo Bagnis completed an Austrian job Friday at the Salzburg Open to reach the semi-finals of the ATP Challenger Tour 125 clay-court tournament, beating Dominic Thiem and Maximilian Neuchrist as he pulled double duty following a rain interruption on Thursday.
Bagnis had fought past the 2020 US Open winner and former World No. 3, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in the morning before he also had to go the distance against local qualifier Neuchrist 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-2 in the afternoon. The 32-year-old Argentine broke his rival’s serve five times to prevail after two hours and 23 minutes.
Bagnis, the Salzburg Open defending champion, will next take on Thiago Monteiro. The sixth-seeded Brazilian edged out No. 2 seed Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-4. Monteiro struck six aces and won 70 per cent of his first-service points to seal victory in exactly three hours of play.
In the top half of the draw, Corentin Moutet stopped the run of 19-year-old Austrian Lukas Neumayer. The Frenchman beat the wild card entry 6-2, 6-2 in one hour and 20 minutes and will next oppose Norbert Gombos. The World No. 124 from Slovakia defeated Spanish lucky loser Pol Martin Tiffon 6-3, 6-1. The encounter lasted one hour and three minutes.
