Lukas Klein has captured the title of the fifth edition of the Alicante Ferrero Challenger hosted by the JC Ferrero Equelite Sport Academy in Villena, Spain. The 24-year-old Slovakian defeated Nick Hardt from the Dominican Republic 6-3, 6-4 in Sunday’s singles final.
No. 8 seed Klein battled his way to the championship match of the €45,730 hard-court event with wins over Kacper Zuk of Poland, Belgian Michael Geerts, Salvatore Caruso of Italy and Fabian Marozsan from Hungary.
The World No. 222 struck six aces and won 71 per cent of his first-service points to secure victory in one hour and 25 minutes.
Klein lifted his second Challenger career trophy following his triumph in Troisdorf, Germany in May. He earned €6,190 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points.
Haase/Olivetti earn doubles title
On Saturday, Robin Haase of the Netherlands and Frenchman Albano Olivetti claimed the doubles title. The top seeds fought past the all-Uzbek combination of Sanjar Fayziev and Sergey Fomin 7-6(5), 7-5 in one hour and 37 minutes.
By celebrating their first team triumph, Haase and Olivetti split €2,670 in prize money and pocketed 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
