The South American clay-court swing on the ATP Challenger Tour continues this week in Brazil with the inaugural Challenger Dove Men & Care Sao Leo Open. The $53,120 event is being held at the São Leopoldo Tênis Clube in São Leopoldo, an industrial city located in the south state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Top seed Facundo Bagnis opened his title bid on Tuesday with a solid 6-4, 6-2 first-round win over home favourite Pedro Boscardin. The World No. 103 from Argentina, who is bidding for his third Challenger crown of the season following his triumphs in Pereira, Colombia and Ambato, Ecuador, saved the only break point he faced and converted three of his own break point opportunities to advance in one hour and 42 minutes.
Bagnis will next face the winner of the encounter between Swedish qualifier Leo Borg and local wild card entry Gustavo Heide.
In other action, Felipe Meligeni Alves of Brazil booked his second-round spot with a hard-fought 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over Argentine Juan Bautista Torres. The fourth seed broke his rival’s serve six times and won 54 per cent of the total points played to succeed in two hours and 38 minutes. Up next for Meligeni Alves will be either last week’s Uruguay Open champion Genaro Alberto Oliveiri of Argentina or Nicolas Alvarez from Peru.
