PERUGIA/STARNBERG, June 17, 2023
Edoardo Lavagno has reached his first semi-final on the ATP Challenger Tour at the Internazionali di Tennis Città di Perugia | G.I.Ma. Tennis Cup. The 24-year-old wild card entry defeated fellow Italian Raul Brancaccio 6-2, 6-3 on Friday.
Lavagno, who had to deal with several injuries in recent years, converted five of his seven break-point chances to secure victory in exactly one hour of play.
“This is not my first time in Perugia. Last year I lost in the first round of qualifying, this season it’s going much better,” Lavagon said. “From 2016 to the end of 2019 I had five to six injuries and then in 2020 there was the pandemic. They told me I only had a 10 percent chance of playing again in my life. To be here and to be able to be a tennis player is already beautiful and to get a result like this is incredible.”
The World No. 289 from Turin, who captured his fifth career title on the ITF World Tennis Tour earlier in the season in Antalya, Turkey, will next take on Frenchman Alexandre Muller. The No. 5 seed knocked out defending champion and third-seeded Spaniard Jaume Munar 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 after two hours and 42 minutes.
