OLBIA, June 30, 2023
A new ATP Challenger Tour tournament has been added to the 2023 calendar, as the city of Olbia will host an ATP Challenger 125 event from October 15 to 22 at the Terranova Tennis Club. This was announced by MEF Tennis Events, which organizes multiple professional tournaments in Italy and the Canary Islands, on Friday.
Olbia is a city and commune of about 60,000 inhabitants in the Italian insular province of Sassari in northeastern Sardinia, situated in the historical region of Gallura. The tournament will be held on Green Set tennis court surfaces.
“We were about to announce an ATP Challenger 100 at the end of September, until the ATP contacted us asking us to organize the Olbia tournament in October and make it a 125 category event. We accepted the request with joy and are happy to follow up on this important synergy,” said Marcello Marchesini, president of MEF Tennis Events.
“The relationship between MEF Tennis Events and TC Terranova was decisive for the birth of the tournament and we are looking forward to seeing some of the best players in the world on the court.
“Only one other Challenger will be played in Europe that week (Challenger 75 in Hamburg) and we will be the only Challenger 125 event. This will guarantee us an excellent entry list. Finally, a thank you of course goes to the institutions that have enthusiastically welcomed our idea of bringing tennis to Olbia.”
