Marina Bassols Ribera captured the title of the WTA Zavarovalnica Sava Ljubljana. The 23-year-old Spaniard defeated Zeynep Sönmez of Turkey 6-0, 7-6 in Sunday’s singles final of the WTA 125 tournament in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Bassols Ribera started the match strongly in front of a packed stands on Court Mima Jaušovec, winning the first set 6-0 in just 21 minutes. The World No. 132 also secured the first two games in the second set, but then Sönmez began to rally, making the match much more competitive.
The decision regarding the winner was reached in a tiebreaker, which Bassols Ribera won 7-2. The encounter lasted one hour and 20 minutes.
“Kaja Juvan, with whom I share training courts in Barcelona, told me a lot about Ljubljana and it’s beautiful here. I have no regrets about coming here. I have personally witnessed what a beautiful city it is, and at the same time, I achieved my first victory in a WTA tournament. Ljubljana and Slovenia will remain in my most beautiful memories,” said Bassols Ribera.
In the doubles final, Russian Amina Ansba and US-American Quinn Gleason beat Colombian Yuliana Lizarazo and Freya Christie of Great Britain 6-3, 6-4.
