Khachanov Beats Ramirez-Hidalgo For Samarkand Challenger Title

SAMARKAND, May 14, 2016

Top-seed Karen Khachanov defeated Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in the “battle of the generations” at Saturday’s final of the $50,000 Samarkand Challenger, winning 6-1, 6-7, 6-1.

The 19-year-old Russian fired 11 aces, winning 80% of his first service points against the Spanish veteran, who has become the oldest finalist on the Challenger Tour with 38 years and 4 months. The encounter lasted one hour and 52 minutes.

Khachanov captured his first title of the season, lifting his second Challenger trophy after Istanbul last year. The Next Generation star is the fifth teen titlist this year, joining Taylor Fritz, Andrey Rublev, Quentin Halys and Blake Mott.

Earlier the day, Denis Matsukevich from Russia and Andrei Vasileski from Belarus defeated Taiwanese pair of Cheng-Peng Hsieh and Tsung-Hua Yang 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 to claim the doubles title in one hour and 14 minutes.
