The top half of the draw was in second round action on Thursday at the €42,500 XIV Venice Challenger Save Cup in Mestre.
First seed Paolo Lorenzi rallied back from a set down to beat qualifier Nicolas Jarry from Chile 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The world number 34 from Italy, who also had to go the distance in his opening match against Bastian Trinker, won 72% of his first service points and converted four of his 7 break point opportunities to prevail in one hour and 56 minutes.
Lorenzi will next face Dennis Novak. The 22-year-old Austrian dismissed Ilya Ivashka 6-1, 6-3, saving all three break points he faced to advance after 69 minutes.
Matteo Viola awaits the winner of the encounter between fourth seed Gastao Elias and Czech qualifier Marek Michalicka in the quarterfinals. The 28-year-old Mestre native cruised past German qualifier Daniel Masur, winning 6-2, 6-2 in only 68 minutes.
