Top seed Juan Pablo Varillas has booked his spot in the quarterfinals of the Circuito Banco BRB/Engie De Tenis Profesional – Sao Leo Open. The defending Sao Leo Open champion of the $82,000 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event, being held at the Sao Leopoldo Tenis Clube in Sao Leopolo, Brazil, fought past Argentine qualifier Lorenzo Joaquin Rodriguez 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-3 on Wednesday.
Varillas struck nine aces and won 71 per cent of his first-service points. The World No. 95 from Peru broke his rival three times to secure victory in three hours and 14 minutes.
Up next for Varillas will be No. 8 seed Goncalo Oliveira from Portugal, a 7-6(5), 6-2 second-round winner over Italian Gianluca Mager. The encounter lasted one hour and 44 minutes.
Brazilians reach quarterfinals
In the bottom half of the draw two home favourites advanced to the stage of the final eight. Matheu Pucinelli de Almeida battled past Juan Carlos Prado Angelo of Bolivia 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. The 22-year-old Campinas native capitalized on four of his eight break-point chances and won 52 per cent of the total points played to prevail after two hours and 42 minutes.
Pucinelli de Almeida will next take on fellow Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alves. The No. 4 seed received a walkover from local wild card entry Mateus Alves, who was forced to withdraw from the match due to a left leg injury.
