The Spanish clay-court swing on the ATP Challenger Tour continues this week with the III Open Comunidad de Madrid, which offers a total prize money of €120,950 and is being held at the Club De Campo Villa De Madrid.

After top seed Taro Daniel of Japan fell in the opening round on Monday to Italian Giulio Zeppieri in three sets, No. 2 seed Albert Ramos-Vinos advanced to the second round on Tuesday. The 105th-ranked Spaniard fought past Jordanian qualifier Abdullah Shelbayh 6-1, 1-6, 6-2. Ramos-Vinolas, who entered the main draw by a wild card, converted four of his 13 break-point chances to secure victory in one hour and 50 minutes.

I had a little setback in the second set, where I got a bit distracted with the balls, which were a bit different, but other than that, I think I played very well in the first set and in the third against a young, tough opponent, who is a young promise. I love playing at altitude, I have won Gstaad, I played the final in Quito and Kitzbühel, I just need to achieve a good result in the Masters 1000 in Madrid, which hasn’t happened yet,” said Ramos-Vinolas, who will next take on his compatriot Oriol Roca Batalla, who benefited from the retirement of French veteran Benoit Paire after sixth game in the third set.

Fonseca with Challenger debut in Europe

#NextGenATP Brazilian Joao Fonseca, who is competing in his first ATP Challenger Tour event on European soil, rallied from a set down to overcome Argentine qualifier Guido Andreozzi 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and three minutes.

“I am enjoying my time here. It’s an incredible tournament. Players are treated very well and I will keep fighting to reach another round,” the 17-year-old Fonseca said.

Fonseca, champion of the 2023 US Open – Boys’ singles title, will next oppose Harold Mayot of France. The No. 7 seed outlasted Belgian Joris de Loore 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(4). The encounter lasted two hours and 11 minutes.
