TURIN/STARNBERG, May 15, 2024
Due to ongoing bad weather in Turin, only one main draw first-round match of the Piemonte Open Intesa Sanpaolo could be completed on Wednesday.
Yannick Hanfmann of Germany benefited from the retirement of his compatriot Maximilian Marterer to reach the second round of the ATP Challenger Tour 175 clay-court event in Northern Italy. The No. 7 seed was leading 6-4, 0-1 when Marterer was forced to stop playing due to a left knee injury. Hanfmann will next take on either Luca Nardi of Italy or US-American J.J. Wolf.
Musetti awaits first opponent
Top seed Lorenzo Musetti is ready kick off his home campaign. After a first-round bye he will face the winner of the encounter between David Goffin from Belgium and Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas.
“I’m here to challenge myself, just as I did two weeks ago in Cagliari,” said Musetti. “I chose to play two Challenger tournaments to gain confidence and play matches. It’s not something taken for granted, and I am proud of this choice. I believe it’s the spirit that Lorenzo in 2024 needed. The final in Cagliari helped me a lot, and I hope that this week can give me the same.
“The issues in Rome? I’ve overcome them. It was just a stomach virus that unfortunately weakened me just before my debut. But now I feel good. The season is not yet halfway through. I hope to achieve some great satisfaction. We are working on my backhand and to improve the attitude on the court. I am eager to return to where I believe my tennis belongs.”
