Timofey Skatov of Kazakhstan leads the quarterfinals line-up of the Schwaben Open. The top seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 50 tournament in Augsburg battled past Slovakian qualifier Norbert Gombos 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 in the second round on Wednesday.

Skatov is seeking his second Challenger career title this week in Germany following his maiden triumph in Parma, Italy two years ago. He sent down six aces and broke his rival’s serve three times to succeed in two hours and 12 minutes. The World No. 242 will next take on US-American Toby Kodat, who beat Rodrigo Pacheco-Mendez of Mexico 6-2, 6-1 in one hour and 13 minutes.

Andrea Collarini leads the bottom half of the draw. The No. 2 seed from Argentina completed double duty with a 6-3, 6-1 first-round win over Brazilian lucky loser followed by a 6-3, 6-4 over his compatriot Federico Agustin Gomez. Collarini will play Riccardo Bonadio in the quarterfinals. The Italian stopped the run of 16-year-old German qualifier Diego Dedura-Palomero, winning 6-4, 7-6(5).

In other action, home favourite Daniel Masur defeated Lithuanian teenager Vilius Gaubas 7-6(5), 6-3 in one hour and 47 minutes and will face fellow German Lucas Gerch in the stage of the last eight.

“I didn’t start very well in the first set. Before the match, I didn’t know much about my opponent and was a bit surprised how strong he played right from the beginning,” said Masur. “I was able to raise my level, making the first set more balanced, and in the tiebreak, I played the two best points of the match. In the second set, I played really well, but by the end of the match, I felt quite tired from the long day yesterday. I”m happy that I was able to win in straight sets.”

No. 8 seed Elmer Moller of Denmark and defending champion Carlos Taberner from Spain round out the quarterfinals.
