Top seed Jannik Sinner made an impressive start to his title defense on Thursday at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers. Playing his first singles match since his quarterfinal run at Wimbledon last month, the Italian swiftly defeated Croatian Borna Coric with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 victory in Montreal.

Sinner displayed exceptional ball-striking abilities and quickly found his rhythm, showing no signs of rust. The 22-year-old, who had to skip the 2024 Paris Olympics due to tonsillitis, dominated his service games, dropping only four points on his first serve. This was his first hard-court match since winning the title of the Miami Open in March, and he looked in top form throughout the encounter, which lasted one hour and 36 minutes.

“I’ve been here for a little bit so I’m maybe a bit more used to the conditions, but still, I’m very happy about the performance,” Sinner said. “It was a very tough match. Even if you watched the score, it felt closer for sure. I had to save a break point in the second set and if he makes that one it could potentially change the match. It was a very good mindset today and I’ll try to keep going.”

Sinner will next take on No. 15 seed Alejandro Tabilo of Chile. The Canadian-born Chilean beat Italian Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 19 minutes.
