Garbine Muguruza and Serena Williams will compete in the women’s final of the 2016 French Open. The fourth seed from Spain beat Samantha Stosur 6-2, 6-4, converting five of her nine break point chances.

“I’m very happy. This was a bit difficult to play because I wanted to win so much against Samantha. She’s such a great tennis player, returning my serves really well, so I was a bit tense. I succeeded finally, so it’s a dream come true. I really feel good,” Muguruza told afterwards.

World number one Serena Williams ended the winning streak of Kiki Bertens with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over the unseeded from the Netherlands. The 34-year-old US-American sent down five aces and hit 37 winners to prevail in one hour and 38 minutes.

“I think the first set was obviously really crucial. we both had a couple or at least one set point there. I think we both were just playing really well,” Williams said after reaching her 27th Grand Slam final, her fourth in Paris.

“She obviously has a lot more confidence. She’s had a couple big wins in this tournament. Being in the semifinals of a Grand Slam and having nothing to lose just really makes a big difference,” the top-seed added.

“Muguruza has been playing really well. She’s been playing a really aggressive game and going for her shots. Regardless, I think it will be a good match. I mean, last time we played here in France she was able to win the match. I learned so much from that match. I hate to lose, but when I do, I hope it was worth it. That match was definitely one of those that was kind of needed and worth it. So I look forward to hopefully learning from that,” Williams is looking forward to Saturday.

Muguruza also awaits an exciting clash with the world number one.

“I think that she and I are players who like dictating the game. We like dominating the game. If the coaches say that the victory is in the hands of Serena, that’s okay. Mouratoglou is allowed to say that but I’m going to fight for every point. There will be moments when she’ll be dominating, and maybe at times I will be dominating. I think I can be a tough opponent, too,” Muguruza is looking forward to her second Grand Slam final since finishing runner-up to Williams the final of Wimbledon last year.

“The last match has to be the toughest match, obviously. I think the two best players for the tournament are there,” the 22-year-old Spaniard stated.

Williams and Muguruza will square off for the fifth time with the US-American leading 3-1. The Spaniard claimed her only win on the clay at Roland Garros two years ago. The last encounter took place at the 2015 Australian Open with the better ending for Williams, winning in three sets.
