ITF Press Release, September 9, 2024
The 16 teams competing in the 2024 Davis Cup Finals have spent Monday making final preparations ahead of the start of play on Tuesday. The teams will compete in four groups of four nations, with the top two teams in each group at the end of the week advancing to the Davis Cup Final 8 Knockout Stage in Malaga, Spain on 19-24 November.
“The Davis Cup means a lot,” French Davis Cup captain Paul-Henri Mathieu said. “When I was young, of course I was watching the Davis Cup, dreaming to play it one day. I have a couple of memories. I had the chance to play in the final in 2002. Unfortunately I lost the decisive match, but I played some great matches. And I remember beating Carlos Moya in Alicante. It’s a competition that means a lot for the players – especially the French. Hopefully the guys today give hope to younger players too.”
Zizou Bergs of Belgium said: “I hope this doesn’t sound cocky but I feel like we belong here. Obviously there are ranking-wise better teams but somewhere I feel confident that the matches I’m going to get, I can get the wins out of, and I can push the team to go further and take the overall win. I do believe we can definitely qualify for the [Final 8] in Malaga.”
