Carlos Alcaraz clinched victory for Spain against France on Friday evening, confirming his nation’s place at the Davis Cup Final 8 Knockout Stage in November – and taking Australia through to the quarterfinals with them.

“I need to be with the team, with all the players and the staff, seeing them, cheering me on always,” said Alcaraz after his win over Ugo Humbert in Valencia. “Off the court, we have a really good relationship. I need this kind of atmosphere where I feel like I’m not playing alone. Hopefully I take care of my body to be in good shape in Malaga. I’m really happy to get through a difficult qualifying.”

Earlier, USA had achieved the same feat in Zhuhai, with their victory over Slovakia also seeing Germany through. But there is still all to play for in Groups A and D, after Italy battled past Belgium in Bologna and Argentina beat Great Britain in Manchester.
