On Thursday, the second-round matches of the inaugural THERME ERDING OPEN 2024 by Tannenhof, held on carpet at TC Ismaning, took place. The ITF World Tennis Tour W75 tournament, which offers a total prize pool of $60,000, saw continued success for 15-year-old German qualifier Mariella Thamm.

Thamm, who has become a fan favourite in Bavaria this week by knocking out No. 7 seed Ekaterina Makarova in her opening match of the main draw, faced 21-year-old compatriot Nastasja Schunk, ranked World No. 305. Thamm started confidently, holding her serve with ease and securing a break midway through the first set. Despite briefly faltering toward the end of the set and losing her service, she immediately broke back to claim the first set. The second set featured a similarly intense rallies, with Thamm achieving an early break that led to her 6-4, 6-3 victory in 70 minutes.

“Since I’m only playing against older players here who are ranked significantly higher, I feel no pressure and can play freely. Playing against a left-hander on carpet requires extra caution, but I was able to read the serves well and thoroughly enjoyed today’s match,” Thamm said after the match.

Next up for the World No. 87 of the Junior Rankings will be second-seeded Ukrainian Daria Snigur.
