MELBOURNE/STARNBERG, January 25, 2025
Madison Keys etched her name into tennis history on Saturday by clinching her first Grand Slam title at the 2025 Australian Open. The 29-year-old US-American delivered an impressive performance in the final, defeating two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in front of an electrified crowd on Rod Laver Arena, including her husband and coach Bjorn Fratangelo.
After years of near-misses and persistent dedication, Keys finally achieved the breakthrough she had long sought, showcasing her powerful groundstrokes and mental resilience. The World No. 14, who finished runner-up to Sloane Stephens at the 2017 US Open, hit 29 winners and broke her opponent’s serve four times to secure victory in two hours and four minutes.
That’s the type of shot that wins you your first GRAND SLAM!!!

The triumph caps an incredible fortnight for Keys, who overcame several seeded opponents en route to the title.
“I have wanted this for so long, I never knew if I’d be in this position again,” said Keys.
“I’ve been in one other Grand Slam final and it didn’t go my way, and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to get back into this position to win a trophy again.
“My team believed in me every step of the way. They believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself and helped me every step of the way.
“I love you all so much and I cannot wait for more. I just want to say thank you so much. I’m so appreciative towards every single person who helped me continue to believe in myself and push on to achieve this dream.”
Keys has equalled Caroline Wozniacki (11) for the most appearances taken by a player to win the Australian Open women’s singles title.
