KOBLENZ/STARNBERG, January 27, 2025
Home favourite Florian Broska has secured a spot in the main draw of the Koblenz Open. In the final round of qualifying, the 27-year-old Koblenz native rallied past fellow German Patrick Zahraj 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and six minutes.
“I was a bit nervous at the start, but then I focused entirely on my tennis. Now, I just want to keep enjoying myself and be happy with my performance,” Broska shared during his on-court interview after the match. The World No. 576, who captured two titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour last year and entered his home tournament with a wild card, will make his second appearance in a main draw of an ATP Challenger Tour event. Eight years ago he fell in the opening round of the Koblenz Open to Jeremy Jahn in straight sets.
In other action, qualifying top seed Luca Nardi faced less resistance from Dutchman Ryan Nijboer compared to his previous match against Tom Gentzsch. The Italian won 6-4, 6-4 to claim his place in the main draw. Meanwhile, Swiss player Mika Brunold was the first to secure a main draw spot on Monday, overcoming Czech Jakub Nicod in straight sets. “I want to stay in the tournament as long as possible. I feel very comfortable here,” said the 20-year-old from Switzerland.
Ukrainian Vadym Ursu also advanced to the main draw after a hard-fought win over Mats Rosenkranz. Despite an early setback and requiring treatment in the second set, Rosenkranz mounted a strong comeback but ultimately fell short in the decisive set following an early break.
Joining the main draw as well is 30-year-old Christoph Negritu, who defeated Swiss Jakub Paul. Max Wiskandt also earned a spot with his victory over Bulgaria’s Dimitar Kuzmanov.
