PAU/STARNBERG, February 19, 2025
The Terega Open Pau-Pyrenees is now in full swing, with nine first-round matches setting the stage for an eventful Tuesday at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Pau. The biggest stories included the withdrawal of Benoit Paire due to a right arm injury and the early exit of Gregoire Barrere, while top seeds Jacob Fearnley and Raphael Collignon successfully kicked off their campaigns.
The day began with French qualifier Lucas Poullain staging a comeback to defeat Vilius Gaubas 5-7, 6-2, 6-0. Meanwhile, Arthur Fery, fresh off his ITF World Tennis Tour M25 title win in Roehampton, justified his main draw wild card by overcoming China’s Fajing Sun 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. Another Frenchman, Robin Bertrand, cruised past compatriot Pierre Delage in just over an hour, winning 6-4, 6-2, while German qualifier Patrick Zahraj made quick work of Alibek Kachmazov, prevailing 6-3, 6-1.
One of the most gripping matches of the day featured French qualifier Maxence Beauge, ranked World No. 570, who nearly pulled off an upset against second seed Collignon. Despite a valiant effort, the Belgian emerged victorious in a hard-fought battle, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.
Lucky loser Pedro Cachin capitalized on his late entry, knocking out Barrere in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. The Argentine will next face Austria’s Filip Misolic, who recently reached the final in Tenerife. Misolic battled past Lithuania’s Edas Butvilas, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Another lucky loser, Maxime Janvier, stepped in for the injured Benoit Paire but was unable to seize his opportunity. After saving two match points in the second set and earning a break lead in the decider, Janvier ultimately fell to Evgeny Karlovskiy 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 in a tense affair.
Closing out the night, top seed and tournament favorite Jacob Fearnley lived up to expectations. The only Top 100 player in the draw, the Scotsman secured a routine 6-4, 6-4 victory over Slovakia’s Lukas Pokorny, breaking once in each set to move into the next round.
