Bolivian Hugo Dellien had to work harder than expected against US-American qualifier Joshua Sheehy on Wednesday, but in the end, the top seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 75 tournament secured his place in the quarterfinals of the II Yucatan Open.

Dellien, who was ranked World No. 64 in 2022, faced a tough battle. Despite expectations of a routine win, the match was far from easy. Dellien took the first set 6-3, but things got complicated in the second. After a 3-3 tie, Dellien broke serve but immediately lost his own. The set remained tight until the tiebreak, where the Bolivian raced to a 5-1 lead, seemingly sealing the match. However, Sheehy responded with six consecutive points to steal the set and force a decider. In the final set, Dellien regained his composure and closed out the match 6-3.

Olivo edges out Tomic

Elsewhere, Argentina’s Renzo Olivo delivered the upset of the day, defeating fifth seed Bernard Tomic of Australia in a tense battle, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4), after two hours and 14 minutes on the stadium court.

“It was more of a mental match than anything else,” Olivo admitted after his victory.

The Argentine won the first set but quickly fell 0-3 in the second. He couldn’t recover in time to avoid losing that set but made sure Tomic had to fight hard in the decider.

“It was a strange match. At times, Tomic didn’t seem to fight for certain points, but he was still tough to play against. The truth is, he has an incredible ability to read the game. I felt uncomfortable because it seemed like he knew what I was going to do half a second before I did it. He was always one step ahead!”

The third set was a tight contest, with both players battling for every point. Tomic looked set for victory when he broke serve to go up 6-5, but Olivo had other ideas. He immediately broke back, forcing a tiebreak, where he completed his efficient comeback.

Tomic, a former World No. 17, showed flashes of his past brilliance, especially with his powerful serve. However, he struggled with consistency in the decisive moments. In the final set, he recorded three aces and three double faults, while Olivo had four aces and no double faults.

“For two sets, I couldn’t find my rhythm. His game frustrated me, and a lot of things were bothering me. It was more of a mental battle than anything else. I didn’t play my best tennis today, but the important thing is that I got the win,” Olivo reflected.

“I needed to win a few matches to regain my confidence. My goal is always to reach the later rounds of a tournament,” he added.

Tomic and French eighth seed Enzo Couacaud became the first two seeded players eliminated from the tournament. Couacaud fell to US-American Garret Johns in two hours and 33 minutes, losing 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Court Yucatan.
