MIAMI/STARNBERG, March 23, 2025
Coleman Wong achieved the biggest victory of his career on Saturday at the Miami Open presented by Itau, stunning 13th seed Ben Shelton from the United States.
The 20-year-old wild card entry from Hong Kong delivered a resilient performance from start to finish, securing a hard-fought 7-6(3), 2-6, 7-6(5) win. Wong withstood 17 aces, won 11 points less than his opponent but prevailed after two hours and 16 minutes.
The World No. 128 becomes the second-lowest-ranked player to reach the Miami Open third round in the past 10 years following Martin Damm in 2024.

“I always trust myself to play in these big stages… I had a tough time [during] the COVID times,” Wong said. “I didn’t play for a year and a half and I’m really lucky my team keeps supporting me. I’m really happy. This is for you Hong Kong.
“My parents, my coaches, my team. They really helped me a lot from highs and lows. They know that I’m struggling and came in here, [it was] not easy. Playing against a guy like Ben, it’s a dream [to do that], since when I was young. Playing big tournaments against top players, I’m really happy.”
With his first-round victory over Germany’s Daniel Altmaier, Coleman Wong made history as the first player from Hong Kong to secure a win at a Masters 1000 event. Up next, he will face Australian lucky loser Adam Walton.
Wong’s win was the second upset at this year’s Miami Open after No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz fell to Belgian veteran David Goffin 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the second round on Friday. Other seeded players, who exited the tournament on Saturday include Jack Draper from Great Britain, Andrey Rublev of Russia and Danish Holger Rune.
