Wawrinka Snaps Coric’s Winning Streak, Advances At Napoli Tennis Cup

Stan Wawrinka defeated Borna Coric in a second-round blockbuster at the Napoli Tennis Cup on Thursday. In the pair’s fifth meeting, the 39-year-old Swiss emerged victorious 6-2, 6-3 to snap a 16-match winning streak from the former World No. 12 of Croatia.

In front of an enthusiastic crowd on the Campo D’Avalos, Wawrinka dominated most of the rallies. The three-time Grand Slam champion sent down four aces and broke Coric’s serve five times to prevail after one hour and 43 minutes.

Following three consecutive title wins on the ATP Challenger Tour, Coric lost his first match this month. Wawrinka will next take on top seed Luciano Darderi. The World No. 61 from Italy cruised past Indian Sumit Nagal 6-0, 6-1 in only 49 minutes.

Earlier in the day, Pierre-Hugues Herbert edged past German alternate Max Hans Rehberg 7-5, 6-4. The 150th-ranked Frenchman converted three of his four break-point chances and won 55 per cent of the total points played to succeed in one hour and 53 minutes.

Herbert will meet Italian qualifier Andrea Pellegrino in the quarterfinals. The 27-year-old beat Gauthier Onclin of Belgium 7-5, 6-3 in one hour and 48 minutes.
