Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador and Mate Pavic of Croatia became just the sixth team to win the “Sunshine Double” – Indian Wells and Miami – Saturday afternoon after capturing the Miami Open presented by Itau men’s doubles title at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. However, the Salvadoran/Croatian duo had to wait out a two-hour rain delay that lasted longer than their 96-minute title match.

It was worth the wait, though, as the co-World No. 1s and top seeds defeated No. 6 seeds Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool of Great Britain, 7-6 (3), 6-3, to win the Miami title. It was the third ATP Masters 1000 title together for Arevalo and Pavic as a team.

Although Arevalo and Pavic didn’t lose a set in the California palm desert earlier this month, in Miami three of their five victories were the result of winning match tie-breaks. They’re the first team since Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut of France in 2016 to win the Sunshine Double.

In the final, Arevalo and Pavic won 88 percent of their total service points, including five aces, and they converted one of five break points while not facing any break points on their serve. They outpointed Cash and Glasspool 67-49.

I think it was something special [the Sunshine Double], but it wasn’t something I was even thinking about,” Arevalo said, quoted by the ATP Tour website. “We have been playing well. In Indian Wells we did a great week, winning some matches. And we are super happy now we were able to win back-to-back titles here in the U.S.”

The victory was the 18th in 23 matches this season for Arevalo and Pavic and they are now 65-25 as a team. They’ve won six titles together, including three ATP Masters 1000 crowns and last year’s Roland-Garros title. It was Pavic’s 41st tour-level title.

“We had a great year last year, finishing No. 1,” Pavic added, quoted by the ATP Tour website. “We showed we could be at the top and doubles is an interesting game. It is very close so to achieve something like this is not easy. Winning a couple of matches helps boost your confidence and I think that was the edge that we had the past couple of matches.”

Cash and Glasspool, who were trying to win their first ATP Masters 1000 title together, dropped to 19-6 this season and are 26-11 overall.
