Chilean Tomas Barrios Vera has been crowned champion at the prestigious Campeonato Internacional de Tenis de Campinas in Brazil. The 27-year-old lived up to his top-seed status by defeating 22-year-old Ecuadorian Alvaro Guillen Meza in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to claim his fifth career ATP Challenger Tour career title.

Despite rain affecting the tournament earlier in the week, the final was played under clear skies and in front of packed stands at the Sociedade Hípica de Campinas. The Brazilian crowd enthusiastically backed the charismatic underdog Guillen Meza, but Barrios Vera remained composed and clinical, dropping just one service game throughout the match. His tactical precision and consistent play proved too much for the young Ecuadorian.

“It was a tough week and a lot of hard work, but I’m very happy. I played well in the first two matches and kept improving as the tournament went on. Honestly, I feel great in Brazil, and playing here in Campinas is very enjoyable — everyone makes the atmosphere really pleasant,” said Barrios Vera after the win.

Despite the defeat, Guillen Meza, who was playing in his first ATP Challenger final, remained upbeat:

“I’m happy with how my week went and feel more confident about the work we’re doing. Today was a tough match. Tomas is a very good player and had a lot of quality. The conditions were tricky with the wind, and I have to give him credit — he played a great tactical match from start to finish.”

With the victory, Barrios Vera earned 75 ATP Ranking points and $14,200 in prize money, moving up to World No. 128. Guillen Meza rises from No. 243 to No. 210 in the ATP Rankings, taking home 44 points and $8,330.

Barrios Vera will now head to the United States to compete in the Sarasota Open main draw, while Guillen Meza is scheduled to play at the ATP Challenger 50 in Porto Alegre at the end of April, with a stop at the ATP event in Tucuman before that.
