Vilius Gaubas has claimed the title of the inaugural Open Menorca. The No. 7 seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 100 clay-court dominated beat Pol Martin Tiffon 6-0, 6-4 in singles final.

On a sunny Sunday with temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius and in front of packed stands at the Club Tenis Ciutadella, Gaubas dominated the clay-court action right from the beginning. The 20-year-old Lithuanian, who is based in Alicante and is coached by former World No. 23 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, capitalized on five of his nine break-point chances and won 59 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in one hour and 18 minutes.

“It was a mental game for me. I played well but it was difficult to close it out, as I was pretty nervous. I didn’t want to think about it but I knew it was a final and all the tension with a lot of people watching. I just went for it and it worked out in the end,” Gaubas said.

“Pol didn’t seem to feel great physically in the first set. I was playing well and relaxed. After the first set he received a treatment and he relaxed a bit and started to hit the ball harder. It was working for him for some time but it’s quite difficult to play like this all the time. I just tried to stay solid.”

Gaubas has now reached a new career-high ranking of World No 148. “That’s quite amazing, as I didn’t have the best start into the season. The goal was to get into the Top 150, so I am super happy right now,” the champion added.

By lifting his second ATP Challenger Tour career trophy following his maiden triumph in Cordenons, Italy last year, Gaubas earned €20,630 in prize money as well as 100 ATP Ranking points.

“It was a great final and a big fight but Vilius was the better player today,” said Martin Tiffon, who appeared in his first ATP Challenger title match. He pocketed €12,110 in prize money as well as 50 ATP Ranking points.
