Things haven’t exactly gone according to plan for Alexander Zverev lately, but the World No. 2 remains confident that a turnaround is near. Speaking at a press conference ahead of the BMW Open by Bitpanda in Munich, the 27-year-old German struck an optimistic tone about finding his rhythm again.
“I believe I’m coming out of this phase soon,” Zverev said on Saturday at the venue of the MTTC Iphitos. “I feel like I’m starting to play better and better.” Despite a stretch of disappointing results, he’s holding firm in his belief that form is temporary, but class is permanent. “I still trust myself. I’m confident that by the time Paris comes around, I’ll be playing really good tennis,” he added, referring to Roland Garros, which kicks off on May 20.
Since reaching the final at the Australian Open, where he fell to Italy’s Jannik Sinner, who was later suspended for three months due to a doping violation, Zverev has entered six tournaments without making it past the quarterfinal stage. Most recently, he suffered an early exit at the Monte-Carlo Masters, losing his opening match to Matteo Berrettini and missing a golden opportunity to overtake the suspended Sinner as World No. 1.
“Tennis is important, but it’s not everything in life,” Zverev said. “Win or lose, I still go home the same way.” He reflected on his run to the Australian Open final just a few months ago: “You don’t forget how to play tennis overnight.”
Still, he admitted that recent performances haven’t met his expectations. “I haven’t been playing particularly well. I’ve lost matches I should have won,” the Hamburg native said. “But it is what it is — we are where we are now. I’m still confident I’ll play well now and, hopefully, in the coming weeks too.”

When asked about the rumors of a potential coaching collaboration with Boris Becker, Zverev remained tight-lipped. “If there’s news, I’ll say something. But there’s no news right now,” he said. Becker had been spotted courtside during some of Zverev’s practice sessions in Monte Carlo, sparking speculation about a partnership.
Zverev will face Alexandre Muller of France in the first round of the BMW Open by Bitpanda ATP 500 event, scheduled for Monday or Tuesday.
“We know each other from our days as juniors. We are of the same age, and I played against him at the US Open last year. I just hope that I can just show good tennis. Then, I will not have to focus too much on my opponent,” Zverev said.
